O’Bryan McCoy Burnette II, known by his stage name O’Bryan (born December 5, 1962 ), is an American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist.[1]Early life[edit]
Born in St. Louis, Missouri. O’Bryan McCoy Burnette II was playing the piano at 6 years old and then began singing in the church and at local talent shows. In 1974, he and his family moved to Santa Ana, California. O’Bryan was singing in the Second Baptist Church young adult choir when his friend Melanee Kersey approached him about considering a career in music. Melanee Kersey introduced the young singer to her husband, producer Ron Kersey.[2]
A former keyboardist for The Trammps and a veteran of the ’70s Philadelphia music scene, Kersey invited O’Bryan to join a group he was putting together. That group quickly folded, so Kersey later introduced O’Bryan to ’Soul Train’ television show creator and host Don Cornelius, with whom Kersey formed Friendship Producers Company.[1] Cornelius took the young artist to Capitol Records, where O’Bryan released four albums that charted on the Billboard R&B charts.Career[edit]1982-86[edit]
The first album, Doin’ Alright was released in April 1982 and peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. The lead single, “The Gigolo,” was a slice of funk with new wave and rock elements that emphasized O’Bryan’s falsetto. Released in January, “The Gigolo” peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard R&B Singles charts.[2]
The follow-up single was an updated cover of The Four Tops’ “Still Water (Love),” peaking at No. 23. Among the other standouts on O’Bryan’s debut include the mid-tempo title track; the elegant ballad “Love Has Found Its Way;” and the sentimental “Can’t Live Without Your Love.”
O’Bryan released his sophomore effort You and I in March 1983. The album was named after his cover of the Stevie Wonder ballad. Given a more contemporary twist, the title track was the second single (peaking at No. 19) and since has become one of O’Bryan’s signature songs.[1]
The lead single, ’I’m Freaky,’ was an upbeat, synth-funk song that peaked at No. 15. Album tracks also receiving notice and airplay were the romantic “Together Always”; the fluid instrumental “Soft Touch”; and the energetic “Soul Train’s A Comin’”, which became the theme song for Cornelius’ show from 1983 to 1987. The album peaked at No. 13.
In May 1984, O’Bryan released Be My Lover which became his highest charting collection of songs (peaking at No. 3). The first single — the insistent, chugging “Lovelite” — marched to the top of the Billboard R&B Singles chart.[3] The success of “Lovelite” prompted Capitol to release “Breakin’ Together” as the next single. But it was O’Bryan’s penchant for ballads — the quiet storm staple “Lady I Love You;” the lovelorn “You’re Always on My Mind;” and “Go on and Cry,” which was the third single — that shone as the album’s highlights. The title track also became known as one of O’Bryan’s better uptempo songs.
In 1986, O’Bryan released his fourth studio album, Surrender.[1] O’Bryan collaborated with writers Jerry Knight and Aaron Zigman to create the synth drenched “Tenderoni” and “Driving Force.” But arguably the strongest cuts on the album were three ballads — “You Have Got To Come To Me”, “Maria” and “Is This For Real” — that displayed O’Bryan’s musical genius. Surrender would be O’Bryan’s final album with Capitol Records.
After his exit from Capitol Records, O’Bryan signed to A&M Records. Unfortunately, due to a change in management and creative philosophy, O’Bryan requested a release from A&M. He then signed with Atlantic Records distributed label Third Stone Records which was founded by actor Michael Douglas and record producer Richard Rudolph. Prior to the release of O’Bryan’s first release with Third Stone Records, Atlantic Records folded the label. Thus, at the height of his recording career, O’Bryan quietly exited the recording industry.2007- present[edit]
In 2007, O’Bryan made his triumphant return releasing his first album in two decades ironically entitled “F1RST”. Based on computational physics research (, ), Energy2D is an interactive, visual multiphysics simulation program that models all three modes of heat transfer—conduction, convection, and radiation, and their coupling with particle dynamics. Energy2D runs very quickly on most computers and eliminates the switches among preprocessors, solvers, and postprocessors typically needed to perform computational fluid dynamics simulations. It allows you to design ’computational experiments’ to test a scientific hypothesis or solve an engineering problem without resorting to complex mathematics. In addition to heat transfer, work is also underway to incorporate other types of energy transformations (e.g., phase changes and chemical reactions through ), to support multiple types of fluids (e.g., air and water), and to provide sensor interfaces for creating. The ultimate goal of Energy2D is a versatile system for exploring and learning science and engineering through virtual experimentation, investigation, and design. The Sonate pour flûte et piano (Flute Sonata), FP 164, by Francis Poulenc, is a three-movement work for flute and piano, written in 1957.
The sonata was commissioned by the American Library of Congress and is dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, an American patron of chamber music. Poulenc preferred composing for woodwinds above strings. He premiered the piece with the flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal in June 1957 at the Strasbourg Music Festival. The work was an immediate success, and was quickly taken up in the US, Britain and elsewhere and has been recorded many times. Critics have noted Poulenc’s characteristic ’trademark bittersweet grace, wit, irony and sentiment’ in the piece. In 1976, thirteen years after Poulenc’s death, the composer Lennox Berkeley made a well-regarded orchestrated version of the work that has also been recorded.
The flute sonata became one of Poulenc’s best-known works and is a prominent feature in 20th-century flute repertoire. It has a claim to be the most played of any work for flute and piano.Background and first performance[edit]
Poulenc began to think of writing a flute sonata in 1952, but he was occupied with his Sonata for Two Pianos and then his opera, Dialogues des Carmélites.[1] In April 1956, when he was still working on the opera, he was approached by Harold Spivacke of the American Library of Congress with a request to write a piece for two pianos or alternatively a chamber piece for up to six instruments.[2] Poulenc was too busy to accept, but Spivacke persisted. Poulenc told him, ’Much more at home with wind instruments than strings, I admit I am tempted by this combination’, as he had always preferred winds – with their similarities to the human voice – to stringed instruments.[n 1] In August he agreed to go ahead.[4] The sonata was commissioned in memory of a musical benefactor, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, to whom Poulenc dedicated the work.[1]
Poulenc spent the winter of 1956–57 in Cannes, where he composed the sonata between December and March.[5] When he had completed the first two of the three movements, he wrote to his friend Pierre Bernac:In working on this Flute Sonata I have the feeling of going back a long way, but with a more settled technique. It’s a sonata of Debussyan dimensions. It’s the French sense of balance [la mesure française]. Finding the form for your language is the most difficult thing. It’s what Webern has in the highest degree … and what Boulez has not yet found.[6]
On 18 June 1957, the public premiere was given at the Strasbourg Music Festival by the flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal, for whom it had been written, with the composer at the piano.[7][n 2]Le Figaro said of the work, ’The music burst forth from the heart, without formality, and ’sang’, in every sense’. Another critic stated that the sonata was ’the best of Poulenc, and even a little better’.[8]Music[edit]
The sonata is in three movements, taking a total of 12 minutes in performance.[9] The score was published in France and Britain shortly after the premiere. In 1994 a new edition by Carl B. Schmidt and Patricia Harper was issued, correcting discrepancies and errors in the earlier published score.[8] The musicologist Malcolm MacDonald writes of the sonata:The work is infused with Poulenc’s trademark bittersweet grace, wit, irony and sentiment, which are manifested in different ways in each of its three movements. The first … makes clear the composer’s elegiac intentions; the second is a haunting cantilena for the flute. Very fast and very tricky for the players, the skittish and vivacious … finale brings the work to a close in cheerful and sardonic style.[5]Allegretto malinconico[edit]
The movement starts in 24 (♩= 82) with an opening four-bar phrase with a descending theme, beginning with a broken triad of demisemiquavers around high E and declining to the G above middle C. The piano’s right-hand part interweaves arpeggiatedsemiquavers over a pedal in the left hand.[10] This is followed by an upward scale by both flute and piano leading to a contrasting theme, also descending.[11] MacDonald comments that the opening ’makes clear the composer’s elegiac intentions’, and other analysts write of the ’poignancy’ of the principal theme, despite the seemingly vivacious tempo.[1][5][12] A counter-theme in F major gives the flute upwardly-leaping arpeggios, before the opening theme returns in A minor. Wilfrid Mellers comments that the reappearance of the first theme in an unexpected key makes it clear that Poulenc is not following sonata form but is using ’a subtle ternary structure’.[12] After a slightly faster middle section there is a recapitulation of a kind with, in Mellers’s words, ’enharmonic ambiguities that justify the ’malinconico’ of the directive’, and:Fragments of the first section’s airborne melody intermingle with ecstatic spurtings of the middle theme. A coda to the coda is explicitly based on blue false relations between major and minor thirds.[13]
The flute part is technically demanding in this movement, with frequent trills and demisemiquaver tonguing.[7]Cantilena: Assez lent[edit]
This movement (♩= 52) is much slower and quieter. In its song-like tune Poulenc acknowledged there were echoes of Sister Constance in Dialogues des Carmélites but the effect here is purely lyrical – an ’infinite melody’ (mélodie infinie) – with none of the drama of the opera.[14] The movement begins with two quavers on the piano, which are echoed by the flute during the course of the next two bars.[15] The smooth scalic lines of the opening section are succeeded by contrasting vigorous dotted rhythmic material in the middle section with the flute going up to a top B, before the tranquil opening theme returns to bring the movement to a close.[7]
Asked about the term ’cantilena’, Poulenc replied that it ’is not a fixed form like passacaglia for example, it is a free form … I could have called it an interlude (’intermède’) or a romance’.[16]Presto giocoso[edit]
This movement (♩=160–168) is predominantly extrovert and fast; the beat is a strongly marked 24. The shape is roughly that of a rondo with choruses and verses, but Poulenc treats the form freely. In Mellers’s phrase, ’The flute flickers, the piano bounces, in a helter skelter gallop’.[17] The fast music culminates in a long trill on high G, followed by a brief silence from which there comes, unexpectedly, a quotation from the dotted rhythm ’mélancolique’ theme of the first movement’s middle section, in its original key of F sharp minor.[18] The music gathers speed again and the sonata sprints to a double fortissimo finish, ’strictement en mesure sans ralentir’ (’strictly in time without any slowing down’).[19]
The finale is sometimes compared to the exuberant finales of Poulenc’s early chamber works, particularly the Trio (1926), but the Poulenc scholar Claude Caré finds more in common between this movement and the Concert champêtre (1927–28).[20] The composer is reported to have said that the movement should be played as quickly as possible because ’it isn’t any good’ (he probably would have liked more time to work on it)[1] but others have found it ’masterly’[18] and ’a perfect conclusion’.[1]Later concert performances and recordings[edit]
Poulenc considered giving the American premiere together with Rampal during a planned US tour, but the tour did not take place and Rampal gave the American premiere in February 1958 with his regular accompanist Robert Veyron-Lacroix.[21] Poulenc was pleased to accompany other flautists in the sonata. In January 1959 he accompanied Gareth Morris in the British premiere, in an all-Poulenc programme that included the world premiere of his Élégie in memory of Dennis Brain for horn and piano.[22] Later in that year Poulenc played the piano part with Maxence Larrieu in Avignon, Rampal in Paris and Christian Lardé in Menton. in 2015, the pianist and scholar David Owen Norris called the sonata ’probably the world’s most played piece for flute and piano’.[23]Recordings[edit]
The American premiere was recorded, as was the composer’s Paris performance with Rampal.[24] There have been many subsequent recordings of the sonata. Among the earlier ones are those by Michel Debost with Jacques Fevrier and Rampal with Veyron-Lacroix. Later recordings include those by Julius Baker with Lisa Logan and Mathieu Dufour with Éric Le Sage. Among recordings singled out in a BBC Radio 3 survey in 2015 are those by William Bennett with Clifford Benson; Sharon Bezaly with Ronald Brautigam; Patrick Gallois with Pascal Rogé; Emmanuel Pahud with Le Sage; Ileana Ruhemann with Kathron Sturrock; and Adam Walker with James Baillieu.[23]Orchestral version[edit]
In 1976 the flautist James Galway asked the English composer Sir Lennox Berkeley, a good friend of Poulenc’s for many years, to orchestrate the sonata.[25] While working on it, Berkeley wrote in his diary:The task of orchestrating Poulenc’s Flute Sonata ... proves as difficult as I had feared. ... The difficulty is the entirely pianistic nature of the accompaniment, extremely difficult to translate into orchestral terms. ... Another difficulty is that Francis, though there are things I love in his music, has passages that are strangely clumsy and that I long to rewrite, but of course I can’t add or subtract anything and I should only spoil the whole thing … I have to think all the time of how he would have wanted it to sound.[25]
The musicologist Roger Covell wrote of Berkeley’s orchestration, ’It is hard to imagine the job being done better … this sonata-concerto has Poulenc’s characteristic and attractive mixture of flippancy and tenderness’.[26]The Musical Times commented in 1978 that ’the orchestration does complete justice to the composer. [It] adds a worthwhile new dimension to the music: the long-drawn sad melodic lines played by the flute, especially in the first two movements, are complemented in a way not possible on the piano’.[27]
The orchestral arrangement has been recorded by Galway with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Charles Dutoit, and later by Emily Beynon with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Bramwell Tovey, Jennifer Stinton with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Steuart Bedford, and Bezaly with the Residentie Orkest Den Haag and Neeme Järvi.[28]Notes, references and sources[edit]Notes[edit]

For Ori, his main resource is Kristin Naigus, who owns hundreds of woodwind instruments, all of which she can play professionally. Naigus plays 20 different instruments in the soundtrack for Ori. Composer Gareth Coker evolves Ori’s aural journey with both majesty and nuance, paying great care to the vulnerability and wonder of where we last left this character. Moon Studios created something special that would go down in history as a defining trait of the Xbox One, a game that was not only beautiful, but was played as one of the best Metroidvania type games available, sitting atop classic such as Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. We reviewed the game when it first hit Xbox One, and as you can tell from the first couple of sentences, it was nothing short of breathtaking. The ten hour journey had us enraptured in an experience like no other, feeding us through an endless series of emotional and thrilling scenarios. With a new generation of consoles here, Moon Studios has released an optimized version of their instant classic for Xbox Series X, and with it comes some visual improvements that only help strengthen the game’s legacy.
On the iam8bit store, both Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps vinyl soundtracks are available for pre-order for $39.99 each. Yes, that means you will spend a bit over $80. Naigus plays 20 different instruments in the soundtrack for Ori and the Will of the Wisps, including the mystical-sounding crystal flute and the deep, flurrying fujara. Naigus also convinced him.
Their debut effort in 2015, Ori and the Blind Forest, had already set itself apart with the sheer breadth and ambition of its artistic and presentation elements. Another studio who recognized that the then-resurgent design philosophy that is/was the Metroidvania sub-genre was not just a flashback to past fondness. And while not without its short-comings — its combat the only real major culprit, which felt especially secondary and not as fleshed out — Ori‘s gorgeous aesthetic, heart-tugging soundtrack and appreciation for the finer detail cemented Moon Studios as a name to trust.
With a visual look such as this, it’s no surprise to see the follow-up, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, has taken so long to even attempt a claim at being superior. The sequel that builds on the strengths of the original, while seeing to the drawbacks that stopped it from achieving perfection. It’s been five years to the day since the original first dropped but it’s been worth the wait. Fans and followers of Metroidvanias have been blessed these past few years — Axiom Verge, Hollow Knight, Yoku’s Island Express andThe Messenger all similarly debut games from studios whom made a great first impression through varying means. But Moon Studios appear to have done the seemingly impossible and bested all of them. Masterminding what might be the pinnacle of the genre in modern times and arguably one of the best games of this generation.

Anyone who’s even taken a peak of Ori will know of Moon’s artistic strides that made Blind Forest such a talked-about debut. The way environments are so heavily, densely layered, yet at the same time don’t come across as over-compensating or distracting from an element that may or may not be unfortunately lacking. Because the truth of the matter is that there are virtually no “lacking” components to Will of the Wisps. What starts as a lively, resonant palette of color — that same pastoral-yet-mythical sheen that gives moments of calm and peril alike an almighty impact — soon gives way to an experience that allows everything else to shine. As unique as each of the background and foreground assets are, you can’t help but take a second to inspect and admire how each platform, slope or tree branch feels emboldened with purpose in the grand scheme of things. How the game painstakingly presents a world so organically proposed — many a platforming conundrum yet seldom feeling like it’s confiding in a set template. How subterranean reaches and connecting routes twist, snake and adjoin to rooms that themselves don’t feel repeated. How, most importantly, all of this is connected.
It’s great to see how gently yet subtly the transition from one region to the next is, yet the route there — even after many a repeated trek back and forth — loses none of its appeal. Despite already working out how best to avoid spikes, pitfalls and traps alike, Will of the Wisps revels in the freedom it harbors due to its swift, fluid controls. And it’s a set-up that easily and quickly pulls you in. Especially when movement-based abilities further open up and expand late on and you find yourself voluntarily free-running from platform to wall to hanging surface to an object you can use to launch yourself off of — ending with a grappling to a surface that, at one time, felt impossible. Impossible in the sense the ability required hadn’t been unlocked yet, but also that personally you didn’t have the confidence to partake in through such risky manoeuvres. And that’s the underlining brilliance of Will of the Wisp‘s structure in regards to its progression — the kind of willing involvement that only gets better and better the more you engage with its many mechanics. Regardless of your level of experience or how confident you initially feel or think about this kind of precision-platforming where speed, timing and good reflexes are all key — the game gently, and cleverly, eases you into the rhythm. Building up set-pieces and conundrums alike where before long, Ori’s fast and dexterous move-set becomes second nature.

Naturally, Will of the Wisps brings back the former chase sequences that require perfect timing. With it, the “so near yet so far” frustration of missing a platform or environmental object — added to by the general trial-and-error posing of tricky situations wherein would-be hazards and pitfalls may not entirely be as obvious on first sight. Yet it shouldn’t be understated just how well Will of the Wisps nails the ease of getting stuck into and engaging with the liberty of movement on offer. More importantly, how the game never discourages you for going at it in a less-than-cautious manner. It doesn’t matter how many times you die; upon death you’re revived almost instantaneously to go at it again. The lack of checkpoints or the minute window of opportunity presents may initially seem a little taxing, but the difficulty is undoubtedly fair, if tough, in its approach.
What’s more, Will of the Wisps expects its players to step up to the mark, yet it’s that trusting of our intelligence that prevents the difficulty curve from feeling anything other than finely-tuned. To not take things for granted and to properly, thoroughly read the environment to see one’s self pass the next seemingly-impossible scenario becomes the real driving factor. Where there are plenty of times where the solution seems entirely absent, Will of the Wisps once more builds its solutions on a mixture of educated guesses, timing and experimental dabbling with the abilities one has already equipped. And on some occasions, whether it be a brief stealth segment in one example or region with supposed safe-zones to quickly get to in another: a leap of faith with no guarantee of success.

Of course for those having played the first game, Moon’s integration of both its aesthetic and of the free-flowing controls on offer should come as no surprise. What should come as a surprise — and wonderfully so — lies more on the gameplay front and how, on a mechanical sense, Will of the Wisps improves on the basis of providing an even greater breadth of tools at a player’s disposal. There’s no place better to start than with the combat — Will of the Wisp‘s most ardent improvement over the original. An element that flows in and out of regular exploration/platforming with immediate and accelerated pace. An arsenal of tools that — providing you have the accumulated energy to use — can aid in a helpful chain of melee swipes, projectiles and area-of-effect strikes. Helpful tools for a game that once more should not be underestimated in its scale of difficulty. Even on “Normal” later foes and inevitable boss fights likely to frustrate if one doesn’t spend some modest time finding that perfect balance between short-range and longer-ranger offensive means. More importantly, when to mix things up depending on the situation.
It becomes even more encouraging to see pop up when taking the game’s alternate to allotting skills into account. Though the linear point-based upgrades from previous are now gone, players instead can assign a series of perks/traits to their person, switching up those they’ve uncovered on their travels whenever they desire. Those who’ve played Hollow Knight will immediately recognize the badge-like approach here — further adding to Will of the Wisps‘ leaning more towards player-made experimentation. Finding the ideal mix of perks that may in one instance increase damage dealt and taken, allow you to stick to walls, build up energy with every successful melee hit or simply provide you with additional health. Even the time trial-styled races, whereupon players race against AI ghosts in getting from A to B, are a novel distraction that makes great work of adapting to the winding labyrinths.

Even the smaller details can’t go unnoticed. While saving is no longer a manual requirement — automatically saving progress at frequent intervals — the game does a great job at masking its back-end requirement for loading assets. There are virtually no load-screens in Will of the Wisps. Even when one wants to warp to a required region — fast-travel is now easily accessible through a simple trip to the main menu — Moon Studios cleverly hides the required tim, behind an animation so as to maintain the illusion that one’s play-time is consistent with smooth transitions to suit without hitches. Think Metroid Prime‘s elevators and you’ll have an idea of how it operates.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps already looked phenomenal on Xbox One, but now it not only looks better, but runs better. Moon Studios took the 2D 3D hybrid and not only cranked up the resolution, but also allows for a high framerate mode as well. It’s one of two games for Xbox Series X (Gears 5 being the other) that supports 4K 120fps and is the only game to fully support it in the single player campaign. It runs beautifully, but if you don’t have a 120fps display, don’t fret, as the game will still play magically at 60fps. To compensate for the half of the framerate, those with 1080p, 1440p or 4K displays and TVs will be able to play the game at supersampled 6K resolution, which makes Ori and the Will of the Wisps even more crisp. Drift kings unity. It’s an absolute masterclass optimization that’s essentially a free-upgraded remaster of one of the best games to be released in 2020.
None of the above could not have had the sheer level of impact it brings without the return of composer Gareth Coker whom once more does an outstanding job on the soundtrack side of things. Offering up hard-hitting after hard-hitting hooks and melodies that undoubtedly vouch for Ori‘s more intoxicating emotional influences. The use of timbre and dynamics especially — an assembly of woodwind, string, piano and vocal efforts, knowing all too well when and how to tug at the heartstrings. Much like what Mick Gordon has done for DOOM, Coker’s mix of aspiring, curious, uplifting and tragic passages serve as a kind of musical mirror to what Will of the Wisps presents on a visual front, without ever feeling cliched or that its more dynamic shifts aren’t deserving.Ori And The Will Of Wisps Guide

There are times when you feel obliged to find faults no matter how minor, but in the ten-plus hours spent with Moon Studios’ latest, there are none. It’s a feat few studios can rightfully claim to accomplish in recent times but such a claim is more than merited for a game that nails all departments. From visuals, tone, storytelling and soundtrack, to level design and the glue that holds it all together in gameplay, Ori and the Will of the Wisps‘ brilliant synergy across all fields is matched only by the humble attitude Moon Studios clearly present. Their refusal to let the short-term spectacles outweigh the long-term experience and of their trust in player willingness to succeed no matter the hurdle. Where one may fear the ambitious scale of its world or the emphatic soundtrack is compensation for something. Its steady incline of difficulty, bound to cap off eventually; early, leap-of-faith platforming sure to lose its pull or appeal in the latter half. All these concerns quickly dissipate in what is a game that continues again and again to increase in its stakes. To find new ways to impress, to shake things up in ways that will test even the most veteran of Metroidvania and precision-platformer players. The Xbox Series X version of Ori and the Will of the Wisp displays the game in an even brighter light — as if it needed it already, with a 4K 120fps option readily available to those with the displays that support it, and 6K supersampled running at a smooth 60fps. There’s no better way to play the game than on Xbox’s new console. Although you can command on a unit-by-unit basis, it is much more effective to use your commanders to control entire brigades. Without commanders, combat and movement becomes a constant task of keeping track of all units and getting them going in the right direction. Occasionally, in the midst of the gunfire, cavalry movement and artillery barrages, you can loose track of your commanders. Keep an eye on the command bar; it will let you know when you have a single unit or an entire brigade highlighted. Each unit is represented by a regimental flag, with the strength of its wave indicating the morale or strength of the unit. In addition, there is a hidden menu at the top of the screen, which appears when the mouse is over it.
All in all, although it takes some patience to find all the controls, everything you need is accessible from the main screen. You can even zoom in and zoom out to get close up views of combat or panoramic views of how the battle is shaping up.Artificial Intelligence
